Need how to instructions for replacing freeze plugs in a 1970 chevy C-10 truck with a 402 big block, I have oil & coolant leaking from starter side @ rear of engine, oil is from oil pan gasket not rear main. How much tear down is required? Thanks in advance.

It shouldn't be too bad depending on how much clearance you have from the exaust manifold. At the bare minimum you will have to remove your starter to get to the one behind it. Thake a punch or chisel and hammer and tap the plug on the top edge to try and roll the bottom outward just enough to grab it with a set of plier. To install use a install tool or a large socket that fits just inside the lip of the new plug and tap it in and counter sink it just a hair. The rear ones obviously you will need to remove the trans and flexplate. Good luck!!

Thanks for the info. never had a big block before & everything else I have worked on with it has sucked, small blocks 15 & big blocks 0. Think the old big block is going into storage soon I have an evil small block to make the truck jump, no reason to just have it sitting. It'll make the truck much more fun anyway. Thanks again.

Replacing the big block freeze plugs are no different than small blocks, just as big a pain!

It's debatable but I would use a film of aviation permatex around the edge as well...
