Well, the Inline sixes sure are a hot topic around the boards and we see Magneto championing that cause in the mag... so it isnt't "all V8, all the time" as they used to declare. But i have yet to see a FWD it's true. Have you come across an actual stated reason for it in the mag? Has anyone out there read why? I'd love to hear an explanation... just so we could tear it apart. Spray and pray.

Hello, what I would love to see is a budget early 80's olds cutlass supreme drag car with true olds power, but not a 455 cause we all know what they can do, I am thinking 350 olds power now that would be different. In fact that is what I am doing now on a ultra low budget, we spent more money on gas and admission to our local drags than we have put into this car. The car is a 81 cutlass supreme that I had blown the motor in and my buddys mom had a 70 olds 350 she gave us so we stiped the interior and and everything else we could, and a local shop gave us some number 6 heads with the larger valves and a anciant edelbrock intake and I already had some headers from a 260 I had. it still has the peg leg rearend with 2.41:1 gears and with some old cheater slicks we ran a 9.8 in the 1/8 mile and next week we will be running some indy lite road slicks that were given to us. should be interesting. sorry for rambling on. but lets see some low budget g body drag cars maybe a low budget contest between a pontiac, buick, olds, and chevy g bodys with v8 power cause we all know what the turbo buicks can do. would be interesting. thanks

If they can't do an s-10. How bout a 67-72 chevy pickup their cheap easy to find, and I think the look darn good!! It could tow the other projects, easily accept bbc and sbc. Lots of aftermarket parts availble. I think Hot rod magazine has one so carcraft should build one and race em.

I'm biased here by my own project but I believe that the g-bodies are just about the last hope we have for affordable American rwd fodder.

Can't quite figure out where Car Craft is at these days (if old AMCs are what's up now, old 4-doors could surely be next). The CC that got me hooked, back when, had the Street Machine Nationals and articles on how to go drag racing...imagine that with V-8-swapped Cavaliers. No one is going to do it 'cept a few...if they did they would need their own magazine and it wouldn't sell many.
Anyhow you know that looking for old muscle in a four-door is scraping the bottom of the barrel, just like AMCs. If it really got popular, they'd all be gone in an instant 'cause 99% of them have already been scrapped long ago. For example, two-doors are actually more common now because more of them got saved. Car Craft is in kind-of a tough spot, especially with papa Primedia handing down the edict on what segment to stay in.
I'm with the people who say "Do an S-10". In the meanwhile, the mag continues to be as interesting as ever, however they are doing it. I looked at the hiring qualifications, and I couldn't do it.
P.S. when deciding what kind of car to build, such as whether or not to do a really technically "intriguing" project such as a Cavalier V-8, please do stop to consider two things...such as "will it drive like crap", and also "will it get me a date". Yeah, uh-huh, and no.
Just an old guy trying to give you young 'uns guidance.

Yes. I hear your wise words. I never looked at the reasoning behind the prevalence of 2 door models in that way before. And you're right about CC needing a towing truck/parts hauling project too, since Jake and Elwood only live on the web site now. You are most correct about the Cavalier though: the girlfriend only gives me the lovins when we're in the unrestored and hurtin Bel Air, never the shiney blue Sunbird. Spray and pray.

There are a lot more 4 doors around than you think, there are plenty around here, tons of them all over the place. Maybe the fact that I live in a rural area has something to do with that?

I'll second that. Here in Northern Colorado there are 2 '65 Malibu 4-doors that I see being driven almost daily, to include winters. The rust is brutal on the white one, but the blue one looks in pretty good shape. I also see a primer/white/blue mid-sixties Nova 4-door regularly. Some guy in Denver was selling a 4-door '62 LeMans with a factory 326/glide for $2900/obo. With regular checks through the local thrifty nickel have had the opportunity to purchase recently (for less than $3000) the following 4-doors: '68 Malibu, '70 Malibu, '63 Impala, '65 Galaxie, several mid '70's LTD's, and several late '70's early '80's G-bodies. All RWD american V-8's with carburetors and 3 speed auto's.
If CC would consider a 4 door, there are plenty out there.

The only four door that I've seen in car craft in years was a tiny pic and caption about the "Tijuana Taxi" four door Maverick drag car. They actually thought that car was really cool. I've seen alot of four door model muscle cars on the streets around LA and some of them are really clean, but none of them were any where close enough to be feature car material.

To a certain extent I understand that a car needs to be clean in order to be appropriate for publication, but let's look at their current projects. The Mustang had separated shock towers, and the AMC is getting paint and body work as I type. If they already have cars that need structural or cosmetic work, why don't they go down a few bucks (or few thousand) and pick up a really clean 4-door? One of the '65 Malibus I mentioned on an earlier post looks (at 10 MPH and 10 feet) like all it needs is some medecine for parking lot rash.
If one of the editors came out and said "We don't/won't/can't/aren't allowed to do 4-doors, that would stop the argument right there.
Although, with all the talk about women and Krass & Bernies latest cartoon, I'd like to point out that it's easier to get into the back seat of a 4 holer.

Someone tell me why car craft won't do a 351 cleveland buildup. You can still find them in junkyards. New companies are making parts for them all the time. Edelbrock is now making heads for them, even though they aren't any better than the 4V closed chamber iron heads. Scat, Eagle, and many other companies make rotating assemblies to stroke them to whatever size you want. And the prices aren't much different than the other small block fords. So what's up, car craft?
Drop a cleveland in a fox body already!

Octobers issues readers rides section has two different four door cars. A dodge dart and a Pontiac Pheonix (Nova). The Pontiac isn't even that clean, so maybe there is hope of four door feature car reaches the pages.

I think that's a great idea. A few years ago there was a really nice 66 4 door Fairlane with a 289 for sale. I was tempted but really didn't have a place to keep it. Since I have a family I thought it could haul the family and be more wife friendly. Besides I think 4 doors are becoming more sociallyacceptable with the with the younger growd today. Look at all the imports they drive that are 4 doors. When I was in HS I drove a '58 Rambler because it was so funky looking. I wish I had it today, I'd drop a AMC V8 in it with some nice wheels and suspension upgrages.
