1988 Iroc 305 tpi - will not stay running while in gear but will stay running while in park. If I disconnect the timming advance wire the car will stay running. I also have a problem with over heating while in traffic or on the freeway, cruising at the speed limit. I don't know if the two are related but I have changed out just about everything except the wiring harness. New computer, distributor, mas airflow sensor, throttle control motor, oxygen sensor, new radiator, thermostat, electric cooling fan... etc. Can anyone out there help with advice other than torching the money pit :P

Does it idle high in Park? Sounds like a vacuum leak. Spray water around the intake manifold and note rpm changes. That is likely the cause.

According to the mechanic that worked on the car previously, he has found and fixed all vacuum leaks but I have my doubts so I will take your advice and see if it works. I'll let you know how it turns out.... thanks in advance.

dude
u'r overheating is an easy fix..
go look at the bottom of your ratator surport...is the plastic air dam still bolted to it...
the car breaths from the bottom and if that black plastic piece is missing your car will overheat nomatter what you do...
go look I'll bet it's missing or cracked to pieces
check the egr for your stalling woos If it won't move,FORCE it,If it breaks, IT needed replacing anyways!!!!!!!!!!

I thought that 220 was way to high to start the cooling fan also. but a GM mech that I asked about it said that that is normal for the newer cars. I think it all has to do with emission control?...

yes, newer cars run hotter. they run hot in order to pass emissions standards by more effiecently buring the gases. i think thats also why when you first start them up, they kinda rev up more than normal, before settling down.

My 90 chevy truck runs 210 all the time on the gauge. Back in the 60's chevy small blocks ran about 180.
