What to do with the straight six mustang

Keep the six. As gas prices get higher, the much overlooked in-line six makes a great driver with lots of low speed torque. This is Car Craft, and a lot of you guys just want to go as fast as you can, but you need a decent daily driver too! A small turbo on the 200 six would be economical and still have a little "kick" to it, keeping it fun to drive too. Why not experiment with a rear mount turbo setup? But there's room under the hood too. I drive a six that easily keeps up with traffic and then some. I built the car specifically to drive every day, that's why I chose a six over a V-8 to begin with.

Maybe they should take the old 200 six and drop in in an early 80's Fox mustang body... (some of those had the correct six-specific crossmember in them already...) drop in the six, build it.. and add modern mustang upgrades.. (suspension.. 8.8, 5 speed, etc.), then see what you end up with. Then you could push all the newer-mustang parts to help cover the cost of the non-conventional powerplant, (since it sadly seems these days that it's more about pushing new parts/products/vendors, than making due and/or fabricating what you need..after all.. why build it when you can buy it, right CC guys?? ) Why not run that alloy head those fellows mentioned earlier in the postings?? Where's all the hardcore fabricators out there?? Dare to be different!

A cool idea wish something like that would be done ... but not in what passes for these mags in todays publishing world. Front to back commercial dang near which includes the vast majority of the articles.

None of their advertisers sells I-6 parts boys and a car like this is going to get what the advertisers sell V-8 Stuff. I mean when was the last time any Project Car got a Weiand Manifold or a Isky Cam ? Heck with Smith working on it we are lucky they did not stick stick some damn LS-1 heap in there. Like that Dork Hunkins did over at PHR ....which I no longer subscribe to for that very article.

**LOL** Sad but true... I remember the days in past popular hot rodding mags, when they really got down to interchanges and things you can USE.. NOT BUY from some vendor. It seems these magazines are "product" driven anymore. Notice how they bash (or mention in a line or two..) factory performance parts.. then do the rest of the article on the big dollar aftermarket heads you are supposed to run out and buy. BTW.. I never did understand the chev into ford crossbreed... a waste of space, but how many products were they able to push in that one? What do you think of the "brake kit" upgrades?? Yeah, I have 1500 bucks laying around to "fix" my brakes... But back to the topic... If they are so bent on pushing "products" why not go with the six and add all sorts of chassis stuff to "cover the cost"...?? I like my V-8, but they gotta do something different... surprise us for a change.

Build the six cylinder! We have seen enough V8 builds. Do somthing different for a change and work with what you have. Don't let product venders and advertisers dictate whats cool and whats not and what you feature and build all the time. This is Car Craft, not Hot Rod.

Run the six at wide open throttle at the CC Nats till she blows. Then push the car over to the swap area and sell it. My brother has a fastback and could use the parts.

How about a fuel injection and turbo from a salvage yard? Make a vortech V-6 or similar system made to work on the I-6. Build your own manifolds to make a turbo, or two work! I like the idea of a 5-speed, or 6-speed. Lets keep it racey and convert it to 5-lug. And use some factory 16" wheels from a Lincoln LSC, or maybe the mesh 16" wheels from a Crown Vic. How about using things that can be found locally on the cheap, No budget, just as cheap as possible. The ford 8.8 rear ends are plentiful and cheap, so lets throw one of them in. There are plenty of parts available for them also. 250-300 horse power, slot car handeling, next to no investment, and 25-30 MPG would be a big hit with the prices of gas today. How about it guys, are you up for it???????

Actually it was that dork Vinnie "the Hitman" Kung who sired the hideously bastardized LS1-into-Fox-Mustang "Orphan."

But then it was on "PUNKins'" editorial watch. And former Muscle Mustangs and Fast Ford's chief Jim Campisano's (who's now the boss over PHR and other titles).  So they both deserve the blame as well.

However, before gas prices went nuts, there were more than a couple of chumps doing the Chevy-into-Mustang swap. (Just watch some of the junk run on "Pinks")

Ford's failure to offer a big-cube SOHC/DOHC modular (either OEM or crate) undoubtedly has something to do with this sad phenomenon, as well as the ever-decreasing number of GM F-Bodies (before they were canned in 2002, GM's Camaro and Firebird sold for several years at about half the rate of Ford's Mustang (the new car market adjudging through sales that the Gen IV F-Bodies weren't as desireable as the smaller, better-built Ford)).

But there are also just a number of hidebound Chevy partisans who are too cheap, lazy and/or stubborn to build a Ford or who enjoy offending Ford loyalists with the awful SBC/LT-1/LSx swap.

True enough that the lack of I6 advertisers (and comp'd parts) dooms a six build in CC. Besides, too many CC readers equate V8 power with muscle car.

On the other hand, given all the bad news in automotive world, it's good that CC is a oasis of V8-powered sanity.
