Hell yea...........give the six a try.............when i first got my 67 mustang for my high school ride it had the six in it.........backed with a toploader 3 speed(RAN tag)........after it was back onto the road i kept upgradeing the suspension and set it up for cutting corners.........i couldn't kept up with the v-8 's on the top end but most of them were hard pressed to get me off the line.........or pull away from me in second gear..........now that car has a 302 in it with the same trans...........i kind of miss the 6..........the first time i tried to take a curve with the v-8 i noticed how it didn't feel the same...(and yes i had the right v-8 springs frount and rear).....most of that is fixed now BUT i still miss it............the six went to a good cause............a friends of mines 65 falcon now flys again because of it.............Hey if it doesn't float your boat.........a v-8 is only a engine swap away...........and on rims.......don't go over 17's.........any larger than that and it starts to look crapy..........(i am debateing over putting a 250 I-6 backed by a 3 speed in my 34 ford..............or boss 302 into it with the same trans(i love the RAN tag 3 speed)

........ONLY A FOOL NEVER LEARNS THE "TRUTH OF LIES".............

I prefer cubic inches, " there is no replacement for displacement."  But, I would love to see the six built, five speed backed, maybe stroked, and possibly injected.  I am really tired of the same old stuff, and would love to follow this build.

Watch out... CC has seen a '67 mustang in the scrapyard (see "Behind the Scenes" section.. July 06 issue, page 117) and was looking at some parts.. good stuff like better rear and spindles for better brakes.. but then they mentioned throttle linkage.. are they planning another (***YAWN***) V-8 swap? Time will tell.... Hopefully they see the popularity of the "dare to be different"/ Inline 6 project idea. Perhaps CC would respond and let the readership in on the plans for this car...

"My wife and I are the ones who own the '63 Falcon with the turbo'd 250 that was in the March issue of CarCraft."

Your car is awesome!  While the 4.6 and 5.4 Cammers and 5.0/351Ws make a lot more sense for ordinary mortal Car Crafters, we are all amazed when somebody dares to tackle some uncharted "Everest" like the Falcon 6 and cards serious numbers.

get the 5 lug stuff from a V8 car, but please just keep the 6. does every car have to go 12's? and if we wanted to build a 302 stang to go 12's, arent there already 9,000 articles on how to do it? i say 6, mulitiple carbs, a cam and headers. 15 inch wheels, a simple (cheap) paint job. around here, that would create a crowd at every cruise night. at least more of a crowd than another left over pro streeter,  or fiberglass $100,000 street rod.

the turbo 302 buildup that seems to be in the works sounds interesting to me. sure there are other turbo cars shown in other mags, but how many with the do it yourself approach? i havent seen one and nevertheless seen one with a friggin carb! i say do it. i want to do it myself as well, so i look forward to it and any of the oddball things that come up along the way.

I am a GM guy and anybody that knows me can tell you that.  But I absolutely have a healthy respect for Fords, and the 300 inline six is one of my most respected.  I did drive a 76 F-250 Ranger for years before going to Chev, and I really changed because the Chebby dealership in town gave me a whopping trade in on a new pickup.

The inline 300 six with the four speed manual transmission combo was always up to the task and gave flawless service.  When I traded the truck is had a whopping 235,000 miles on it.  I did replace the cam, lifters, and timing gears at around 150,000 miles, but other than tune ups and oil changes, that was it.  It doesn't get much better than that and it stands as a testimonial to the Ford six.

I have also told the story of when I was racing roundy stock cars back in the day.  One guy ran a early 60's Falcon with a Ford 300 in it.  I think he was trying to make the point that his six cylinder car could keep up with the best of them - and he did.  The car was no slouch, and was dubbed "The Fastest Six Cylinders in Captivity" by the track officials.  The car was also points champion for three years running which pissed alot of the big boys off.  I don't know if that's what he was really trying to do, but it worked.

I think a bunch can be done to a six cylinder that has never really been spotlighted.  I agree with the sentiment that a fresh approach would be to find parts to either inject or supercharge or otherwise enhance the HP and performance of a straight six.

While I think that the best choice is the Ford, leave us not forget that there is the slant six, and the 235 Chevy that are just as common.  Both are good engines in their own right, especially the slant six which found it's way into a lot of commercial uses in rough terrain forklifts, and Chevs that were commonly used in boats.  For those of you who don't know, duty in a 26' Sabercraft Cabin Cruiser is not easy.  It's like pushing a 5,500 pound load at 2500 RPMs uphill for all the time that you are cruising.  So the Chev has proven to be a stand by as well.

That's my two bits,

Bowser

Yes, the idea of running a "big" six is great! (Speaking of roundy-rounders.. old timers might remember the Hudson straight 6, at 308 cubes which dominated the tracks for years..) The 300 Ford is alot of cubes in anyones book... especially good for the theory ..."there is no replacement for displacement.." This is in league with the 292 chev big six and the AMC 4.0/258 combo can get close in displacement as well.  Any one of these would be a great candidate for a cover/build.

I'd like to propose a comparison covering the Ford 300 and a 302 v-8. Bore the 300 30 thou and you are very close in cubes. Add the experimental modernized head, mentioned elsewhere in this thread to be donated just for this purpose, and the race is on. It would be very interesting and I think the six just might have an edge, due to being lighter and perhaps more torquey... build 'em both, install them in the 67 chassis, test 'em out and let the chips fall where they may.  Above all.. dare to be different and keep the six. .. who knows, you just might start the next trend!

Take that 300 six - throw a T-5 behind it with some 3.73's (they are pick a part avail in every van ford ever made).   Big Turbo or belt driven Blower thru Dual Holly 390's and a good exhaust system (One big pipe wieghs less than two and cheaper).  Make it handle and go straight.  Shake up Matt Kings old 5.0 or I'll bet Frieberger still has his Superbee and stage a Car Craft run what ya brung contest.  I'll bet with enough light wieght equipment (repop shelby stuff is all over ebay) that 'stang could administer some serious sting.  That lady's runnin 10's with a 75 smog 350 and juice in a Nova.  You guys ought to be right there in a non-belly button kinda way.

Don't want no 14 inch granny tires either - why not some 16' Panasports or a set of torque thrust's?  Don't you guys have 3 allready?

How much HP can you guys sqeeze outta that sinister six?

Keep the six and see how close you can get to this.

OK,I cant believe I am the first to suggest this....Dump that 6 and go get a junkyard 2.3 Turbo motor from a T-bird Turbocoupe,SVO,XR4Ti and drop it in with a Holset turbo off a Dodge truck, and use a c4 or a t5 and watch that thing rock! These motors are tuff as nails and with some minor junkyard bolt ons will go tens in the right chassis.Stop by www.turboford.net and www.stingerperformance.com to see what these junkyard turds can do!This would be way different but still all Ford.Until you have done some wrenchin on one of these motors you wouldnt believe what they will do.

Pros:

1..XR4Ti harness is a stand alone deal that just needs 12v key on power

2..Forged pistons and good rods that will take tons of boost.

3..junkyard parts-o-plenty

4..light weight

5..they love nitrous too.

6..LOTS of power to be found in head and intake porting.

Thats actually a really cool idea and the all ford part is a huge bonus also.

FE power would be sweet too, but may extremely nose heavy in a coupe.
