Yes, I saw the program with the two pick ups,one gate up the other gate down........The thing I didn`t like about that test is that they used two different pick ups,I think they should have used the same truck for both tests for a more accurate test, what do you think???

No two trucks (or cars) are the same, much less two different drivers,so as far as I am concerned that particular mythbusters show did not prove much!!!!!!!

They actually re-visited that one.  They hooked up a calibrated fuel flow meter to Jamie's truck and ran a couple more tests.  Tail gate up still got better mileage than tail gate down. Though they did not test a camper shell they did put a hard cover on the bed and the mileage wasn't as good as the tail gate up.  The best was a surprise, they replaced the tail gate with a netting of some kind and that generated the best mileage.

Had anyone seen the run with the device that was supposed to generate hydrogen to improve fuel economy?  The part about that one that I found interesting is they wanted to see if the engine would run on hydrogen alone.  Took an unmodified car, disconnected the fuel line, ran it out of fuel, then laid a hose at the top of the carburator from a Hydrogen tank.  The car actually ran until it backfired.  Considering the grossly inaccurate way they metered the hydrogen and air going into the carb I was quite impressed to see straight hydrogen would run a piston engine, at least that readily.

The Silver Buick is a '77 Skylark (Disco Nova body but better because it's a Buick ), it is nearly finished with a '70 Buick 455 and a TKO-600 trans. Just need to get the driveshaft shortened and put the accessories on the front of the engine (alt, P/S and of course A/C).

Also have a '72 Buick Centurion conv't (455) and a '67 T-bird 4dr. (428).

I agree. Even with matching trucks they couldnt get the throttle inputs, ect. exactly the same. one is just going to go farther no matter what.

I saw a news show like 20/20 or 60 minutes doing an interview with the owner. He kept saying he had independent research saying they worked, but the news showed he was full of it. Pretty much proved it was crap.

the best way to improve mileage on a big block is to keep it tuned and the carb clean. And, stay off the gas pedal.

I just found out my friends dad bought one, and he said it helped, although i don't believe him. The whole fuel atomization thing sounds like crap anyway. It might help, and I stress might, on a carberated motor, however an EFI motor already does a great job atomizing the fuel, so I don't see how "swirling" the air would help.Mopar or Nocar

Nice set of cars. The Skylark was my first car, I tried to sell it once, now I decided I'll be very select when picking a car with the intention of not having to ever sell them. Four cars should be enough.

Early next year, depends how much I get done this weekend.  Have to clean up the accessory brackets (sandblast and paint).  The hold ups are my Dad is in the process of moving (most the tools are his) and the severe winds here in SoCal are making it unpleasant to work in a garage with the door open.

Yeah my T-bird was a typical Ford, Fix Or Repair Daily, but a gas tank replacement, carb rebuild and ignition replacement have just about smoothed it out. Still thinking of looking for a way to replace that Autolite 4300 with a Q-Jet....

You can use an adaptor plate to put the quadrajunck on the Ford intake

(not a quadrajet fan) although I did put one on one of my fords years ago with a plate....when those very large rear two`s opened up and worked the way they should it really took off....although the 4Bbl carb from a 460 Ford are just as big and may work better...worth a try,by the way that 428 is a nice motor

I understand the Q-jet quite well, where as I haven't read anything positive about the 4300 spreadbore or otherwise, I have been looking for a 4100 with the 1.12 bores.  Thanks though, I have seen the adapters, I'm more concerned about the transmission kickdown linkage.

if i remember right, on Mythbusters they ran the tanks empty, then filled the tanks with premeasured gas from containers instead of relying on the pump's accuracy.

also, they accelerated using only the cruise control on the trucks. any difference on highway milage would have been minimal.

SILVERBUICK - where in SoCal are ya?
