I have an '80 El Camino with a 350 and a Saginaw four-speed.  It's been stuck in first gear for a while, and I'm still not sure why.  May be linkage adjustment, broken bushings or synchro...?  It's not sitting on level ground so I can't jack it up where it sits.  I went to move it, pushed the clutch in, and my friend pulled it with his truck and the wheels wouldn't move.  I know the rear end isn't locked up.  I started it up, gave it some gas, let out the clutch and it grunts really hard, but it won't move.  Anyone have any ideas?  I don't know too much about transmissions, this is my project car and that's where I need to start.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is the tranny locked in gear or is it locked up?
If you let the clutch out and its not turning (you said it grunts), than you have a bigger problem.Does the motor bog and  stall or just spin like itsin neutral?

Locked in gear is usually the result of poor clutch adjustment and the clutch is not fully disengaging. Is the linkage manual still?
Also...sometimesya just gotta getunder the thing with a small hammerand tapthe shift levers as they can stick in gear...with the car off...crawl under it and see if youcan wiggle the shift levers...if they are really tight than just tap em with a hammer...sometimes it takes a pretty hefty tap too.

If this doesnt work...lemme  know

Good luck

I actually got it to move today, put it on level ground and crawled under it.  One problem was a messed up clip to hold shift rods to the shifter.  I fixed that, used some penetrating on it, and lined everything up with the neutral alignment tool.  It shifts fine now, put the fender wells in finally and drove it around for a little bit.  Problem solved.  Just need a set of floor pans, a windshield, and a new exhaust system.
