"...My friend races SCCA and he certainly isnt shaking in his boots from Gen1,2 style 350s. Guess Chevy turned the water to whine for me."

Yup. We all have "friends."  LOL.

BTW, "whine" means like you're muttering.  Or, did you mean "wine?"  Just tyring to help with your spelling.

Get over it son.

So I have to race SCCA to talk about my friend? Ok, no problem, blinders are up.

Its a simple typo, I am sure others have done the same thing.

Look, I am not defending any particular engine here however, when someone says on one hand that a sub 4" bore is worthless and then someone else says if you want xyz start off with a 283,....etc, the logic just does not add up. I am not trying to win something here except that no one here can prove to me that a sub 4" bore engine cant make power. There are British racing records, Smokey Yunick, other engines, etc that prove that one can make power with sub 4" bores. And the only thing I get is son, @@zhole, they are junk, its a boat anchor, etc. Kind of makes wonder just what kind of crowd is in here.

I am done with this thread, moving on.

Why build a 383 shiby when Ma Mopar built the 383 the right way from the factory?

WOW grown men fighting over a message board.  These message boards really inflate egos fast.

BTW the 4.6L Ford has a sub 4" bore and can make oodles of horsepower but u have to spend pretty good money to get  it there.

IMO build whatever ur heart deires Ic ould care less its not my car

'89 Mustang 5.0L...It may be ugly but I'll show you the taillights with the drop of the hammer.

I would argue that the chevy gen 3 5.3 engine makes good power and its bore is under 4" its bore and stroke is 3.779" x 3.622 this engine makes over 300 horsepower form the factory which is more than 99% of the 350s chevy made

I just built a 305, all stock, with an rv cam, but I just build it for reliability, and its great to have a spare motor when I have to work on my 383.

June 2000 had a 305 build up without rebuild article in it that made 325hp, can anyone dig that article up?

I can't see building a 305 when you can build a 350 cheeper and make more power.

I guess a LS1 could be passed over too since it only has a 3.9 bore.

"I'm not sure what's tougher, being a 305 Chevy, or being a 305 owner. It's all abuse and insults, and never any respect. Talk about building or hopping up a 305 and guys will generally shun you, or even boldly accuse you of being a fool. You'll hear, "Why mess with that junk motor? You're wasting your time." Wouldn't it be nice to lay waste on their stuff instead, with a few discrete bolt-ons? How about a bolt-on package that will add 150 crank hp, and still pull a good 13 in-hg of manifold vacuum at 850 rpm? And what if all the stuff comes in cheaper than what it would take to build the average high performance 350 short-block"

I dont care about a 4 inch rule. The intended direction of this post was to have some fun making fun of an underperformer in the chevy family of engines.

There is no reason to build a 305. none. Even if you already own one. I got a mid mileage 4 bolt 350 with vortec heads edelbrock manifold and headers from a junkyard for 400 bucks and it needed no work.

Their are no low mileage 305s anymore and anything out there today will need a rebuild soon. Why waste the money, time, energy, fuel or gaskets messing around with a 305. Do the right things and junk it for 50 bucks or use the bolts, timing cover etc. for parts.

When i can find a 350 in PA in that condition for that price I would think people in more car friendly parts of the country such as california and such would be able to find one for about the same or less.

Part of car crafting is working with what you got and part of it is knowing something is worthless to your pursuit of speed and ripping it out. It could be your heater assembly, interior insulation or a 305.

So a 302 and 307 chevy should be tossed as well regardless of mileage.

Wait, for that matter all small block chevy engines prior to the current gen LS engines should be tossed. Now I understand. Glad you cleared that up for all of us. Your right about one thing, you probably got ripped at $400 for that engine compared to else where in this country, I should know, I live in Taxsyllvania too, lol. This state sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still say make a coffee table out of it, mostly because it is a Chevy engine, but I guess it wouldn't look to bad either
