"the new mustang (which I believe looks too much like a mustang II - but it is an improvement)"

How so?  The proportions and shapes are completely different.

Mustang II Cobra II (with large aftermarket wheels (originals were 13"). Note the downsloping rear deck lid, hatchback, huge taillamps and peaked tail panel

Note how small the Mustang II wheel openings are in propostion to the body.  Also note the trapizoidal grille and busy headlamp surrounds.

I suppose that explains the 200,000-to-ZERO sales advantage Mustang has over the Camaro/Firebird/Nova this year.

I should have clarified that the part that bugs me the most about the new mustang is the front end, which I believe resembles the front of the old mustang II front, you can see the resemblance in the second picture you posted (grill and seperated headlights). I realize that both of these models came from the same source design so there are some inhereit resemblances, but both cars bug me, and there is nothing about the new mustang that excites me (not even all that plastic, cheap looking body panels or ugly light covers)

last I heard chevy scrapped the new camaro. i read it in motor trend like a month ago.

they were working on a new rear drive platform for all there cars based on the Zeta platfrom I think. anyway they decided after dropping a ton of money into this project that they would not be able to build quality rear wheel drive cars that would be affordable. they also needed that the money they were spending on that to go towards redesigning an ever increasingly stale line of trucks and suvs.

rear drive v-8 would be nice but just the other day I got my butt kicked in my dakota r/t by a cobalt ss. that little bastard was fast.

Certainly you're entitled to your aesthetic opinion.  But a better comparison is to the later model first gen 'Stangs:

I forgot about the Caddys, but they're not even close to being a mid $20K-low$30K V8/RWD performance car. This is the price bracket GM needs to desperately tap because all of it's potential customers are walking right by the dealerships.

R-i-g-h-t.  The following websites feature "girls' cars."

http://www.nmraracing.com/

http://www.funfordevents.com/

(actually, there are many fine female racers driving Mustangs, such as FFW Open Comp champion Suzanne Towe.*  However, the vast majority of Mustang racers have XY chromosomes. )

*Not all women associated with Car Crafting are empty-headed, scantilly-clad "Off the Rack-style" bimbos.  Let's all try to keep our sexist comments to ourselves.

BTW, even the V6 Mustang--to which the sexist comments were undoubtedly directed-- can be easily built into a hard running piece:

"With 7-9 psi of intercooled boost and running pump gas with an otherwise stock 4.0 engine, [Procharger centrifugal supercharger] technology produces a 50-65% horsepower gain. Track testing has shown that a 2 second improvement in ET and nearly 400 HP is possible with the Stage II system."

you can put a turbo on a v-6 camaro or firebird and do the same thing.

My local Chevy dealer said he was fresh out.  Said something about being overrun by secretaries and not getting any shipments from Canada for a couple of years.

The U.S.A.-built Ford Mustang is here, now.  Not a maybe, someday vapor like the imaginary, on-again, off-again Camaro.  Or an import like the overpriced, underwhelming GTO.

Why beat feet for 4-5 years waiting when Ford can hook you up today?

if chevy has any chance of survival in the perfomance car industry they better come out with a new camaro and make the impala a rwd. if they did this they would have evey young kid wanting a chevy instead of stupid ricer.

I'd rather walk than ride in a mustang. I wouldn't doubt a camaro in 2007, the first camaro was 67, so it makes sense. They have the answer for the mustang. So the GTO is a little pricey, it still beats the mustang

Dream on, Bro.

The 2006 models are in the stores now.  And we haven't even see a spy shot of any Camaro prototypes. No news of any crash testing, EPA emissions testing,  fuel economy testing,  durability testing, etc.  No tooling contracts have been let. No news of any contracts for suppliers being let, either.

GM's biggest supplier--Delphi-- is in bankruptcy. Others such as Federal Mogul, ArvinMeritor and Collins and Aikman aren't in much better shape. These suppliers can't afford to do any development for a new Camaro without GM writing some big checks to get things rolling.

GM itself has lost over $4,000,000,000.00 so far in 2005 ($17.4 Million dollars PER DAY average in July, August and September).  And it's unlikely GM could develop a new Camaro and bring it to market (even on an existing platform) for less than $900 million. (That's only about $2,250 per car-- assuming that GM could sell 100,000 Camaros over four years. Note that a typical sedan costs $1-3 Billion to design, certify, produce, and bring to market).

GM's deal with the Canadian Auto Workers Union is that Camaros, if any, will only be built in Canada and now the F-Body plant is closed.  No news on where GM would build a new Camaro or how they would get out of their deal with the CAW.  Given the huge health care concessions the UAW made a few days ago, it's unlikely GM would risk labor unrest by crossing the UAW's Northern relative.

The quickest any major manufacturer has developed and marketed a completely new model under optimal conditions is about two years.  Typically it takes GM 36 to 48 months.   BOTTOM LINE: if there was going to be a 2007 Camaro, it'd be front page news across the industry.  The earliest a revived Camaro would likely appear, if ever, is MY 2009.

Better stock up on shoes. It's going to be a long wait, with no guarantee of anything to drive later.

BTW, the Holden Monaro--upon which GTO is based is about to go out of production.  Thus no more RWD GTOs for until at least 2008 . . . .

Mustangs (and Chargers) don't look so bad now, do they?
