Well, you could install a turbo. The old Thunderbird turbo coupes had turbo 2.3s (so did a small batch of Fox Mustangs) and they made good power.
Your other option is to either contact Racer Walsh or Esslinger Engineering. They specialize in four-cylinder racing stuff, and especially 2.3s, so you might find some parts you can use for the street there.
But, this depends on which 2.3 you have? The old SOHC 2.3, or the newer DOHC motor?

Are you from Ohio? My grandpa's auto-salvage yard has a few 2.3 Turbos on the shelf and stock they have 190 HP and like 170 ft-lbs. My dad had a Thunderbird, heaviest car I've ever rode in, with the turbo 2.3. That sucker hauled. You may need to change your ECM if you go with a turbo, but that is a SOLID 4-cylinder engine that Ford should have kept in production. The NA 2.3 has 90 HP it is good for mileage and longevity, but you should find some parts out there. Esslinger is a good start. With a small truck like the Ranger, a turbo 4 banger would not only create a beautiful sleeper, but would save your wallet at the pump as well. Turbo engines tend to avg. slightly higher fuel economy when driven conservatively than an NA engine.Do some research and let us know what you come up with. Either way that is a solid engine that you cannot go wrong with putting money into.
Guzzling gas and hauling ass, the true American way.
