just picked up a 92 roadmaster mostly for the heads, trans and rear end. did these cars come with 8.5 ring gear, and how can i tell if it has a 8.5 ring gear?

yea they got the 8.5 , but also airplane gears, so if you want a better gear you need to replace the diff assy also. but the stock posis sucked ass anyway so its a good time for an upgrade. by the way its gonna be 5x5 bolt pattern for the wheels.

There was a mix of rears. Some got the miserable 7.5", others got the better 8.5". On the 8.5", it has 30 spline axles... different than traditional 28 spline rears so you can't hock it easily.

You can tell what you have just like any other Chevy rear, look for devil horns on the top and squared off blocks on the bottom around the pumpkin. Horns on top and bottom = 7.5"
