Rebuilding a 200r4

Well the 130,000 mile 200r4 behind my 330hp 380ft lbs. of torque 350 is finally letting go. It is slipping and feels like someone driving stick and very slowly engaging the clutch. The fluid is brownish red and smells burnt. I knew this would happen eventually and am now deciding what to do.

I have very little money so I would like to do the work myself if possible.

What do I need to rebuild the trans to take the power?

Some kits sell for as little $70 but I assume they will just repair it to the point of taking the power of a weak 305. Others sell for $250 and up and say they include alot of things that I dont even know what they do.
Do edelbrock carbs really need the TV cable correction bracket?
Does just unplugging the lock up converter hurt the trans?
I never really cared up till now cause I knew the power of the motor would kill the trans anyway.

Basically I want the best solution for the least amount of money expended. Any advice?

Well I was looking for kits on Summit and saw this one for $276

TCI Pro Super Transmission Overhaul Kits

Do you think this will rebuild a grandpa 200r4 to withstand my engine and shift decently?

That is the kit I used for my 200-4R behind my Cutlass...but more is needed for real, lasting strength.

A stronger intermediate drum assembly is needed, a stronger stator support is needed, and its best to get a larger low/reverse and TV valve.

And yes...you need the throttle conversion kit for the TV cable...otherwise at part throttle you will have too much/too little pressure and will cause premature failure.

I saved about $5-600 doing this myself (as opposed to buying a brand new TCI trans).  If I had it to do over again...I'd just buy the TCI trans.  It was a great learning experience...but a LOT of trouble.

Good luck

I'd give the folks at JW Transmissions a call and see what kind of kit they'll sell you.
