I have a 1961 VW Baja that I want to turn into an off-road vehicle, but I want to leave the body on. I'm open to any suggestions about anything.

Do yourself a favor and build up a VW engine.  Porsches are way expensive and, given the huge aftermarket VW parts industry, it would serve you well to go the VW route.  You can built a solid off-road engine for a lot cost than going for the Porsche mill; it's a source of constant ridicule in VW circles to hear "That thing's gotta have a Porsche engine in it" or "I knew a guy that put a Porsche engine in his VW," when that hasn't really been done on any kind of regular basis in nearly 40 years.

there's off-road forums on each of them and plenty of VW people that can steer you in the right direction.  Good luck.  Plenty of options with Vdubs!

old had a 455 ci front wheel drive transaxle in the wayback, look at the fullsize 80s fwd cars, there was an olds 307 transaxle too,put one in back? or stick a turbo 4 banger honda at 500 horses in the engine bay.cool innit!its good to be a rabid fan of somthing, but it kinda limits what you can do,vdubs r cool, but not the only game, how bout a subaroo awd system a stealth bug that will corner 1g,maybe..
