1250 cfm Holley Dominator. You obviously don't care to stick with reason (hence...dumping that much money into a 305) so why not say to hell with it and go for broke? Sure it'll run like crap...but what are 305's for if not to run like crap? ![]()
In all seriousness, now that you've gotten yourself into this mess...for a street car I'd go no larger than 650 and personally I'd stick with a vacuum secondary carb. Actually...a properly tuned Q-jet would probably be best to restore at least a little bit of that thing's throttle response and low RPM torque while not screwing you on the high end.
As for being different...its still a small block Chevy. It looks no different than if someone had put a 427 or 454 stroker in there (heck you paint it black...and only the most knowledgeable car guy would know if it was, say, an all aluminum 427 SBC from World Products)...only it makes considerably less power than the 383 you could have built for the same money. Want to be different? Build an Oldsmobile...Buick...Pontiac...Cadillac...early Hemi...heck I'm sure there are some Ford's you could build that aren't common...though you'll have to talk to a Ford guy about that. But a Small Block Chevy is still a Small Block Chevy...nothing different about it whether you waste your money on a 305, 283, 302, 307, 327, 350, 377, 383, 400, 427, or 454 SBC.
Enjoy

I guess u do want to be different! hopefully u learned some good skills and maybe u might even liston the next time someone tries to help u. I'm old and tired but I don't know what I would do without the help of fellow hotrodders. Sometimes u have to sift thru alot of bologna but if everyone is telling u the same thing it just might be true. START WITH A GOOD FOUNDATION if u want a good motor!!!!!

You may want to look into an edlebrock 650 or 700 cfm. They are dependable and can be tuned or repaired easily. On the gear you may check Randy's Ring and Pinion. If they do not offer it they are very helpful and will send you to someone who does.
Good Luck, I also am different and have a built Pontiac. It was a $200 purchase at 16 and is still turning heads 31 years later.
