How about featuring more "normal" car-guy garages. I'll use Smith's garage as an example. It's a mess, and like some of his projects..half done! But with that clutter I'm sure there are neat little gems. It's fun spotting those gems in the background of pictures, kinda like Where's Waldo for car parts. I think I spent more time studying his garage in the El-Camino buildup than the actual build! Now how many readers can relate to that? I can! So let's feature a few more REAL garages that are less fairy-tale like, less hospital-clean, and show more scuzzy, greasy, unorganized, cluttered garages/shops that actually LOOK like something is/has/was being acomplished! Don't get me wrong, it's neat seeing soem of the rare stuff these 'nicer' shop have in store, but I'd be more intersted to see how the other 'average joes' garages look and what goodies they may be stuffing away.

Just like mega-buck garages the truth is in the product .Take a close look at the owner of "THE HEMI INSIDE "in your latest Carcraft. That's reality for you in California I guess. No mention in the article of who he is or does for his income.Google the name.

I would assume you remove the switch, connect the 2 leads and seal them with liquid tape and elect. tape. This would work if the switch breaks the circuit to KILL it.

YEAH!  Agreed!!!
Here's a newbie to the on-line/mag scene, who's lived through 6+ years of the resto-mod of a '65 mustang (check out #21 of the Car Craft Best Readers Rides), and having her SKI BOOTS kicked out of the garage for ROOM!  The glam of a clean 2000sf checkerboard-floored garage is a dream for anyone, but ya gotta love the grit of most of our realities...!

Doesn't Summit get enough free advertising with all of the stuff you guys plug for them without having their garage featured ? BTW ......what has happened to local speed shops since Summit threw the doors wide open and started knifing all of the Mom and Pops in the back ?

You guys make it seem like you've never purchased anything from Summit before. I have, do and will continue to do so as well. I love my local speed shop and I shop there all the time. There are times when i can get better deals from them than i can from Summit, however, if i can save $60 on an item through Summit, often i will go that route.

Summit cant offer things like machine shop services, advice from people that might actually know your car first hand, and the comraderie that comes from the local speed shop. They BOTH have a place in the industry and Ill proudly spend money at either one.

I Have never purchased from Summit . Thanks for asking . I do not buy things I cannot touch before it gets to me if I can at all help it . Your local machine shop I am sure loves you bringing in your own parts . Trust me the more stuff of your own you bring in the higher the final price is . PLUS I bet you that the warranty is nowhere near as good if you supply the parts. I have been around enough machine shops and Machinists  to tell you that . And they are hurting the industry overall I promise you that.

not only is the warranty the same, they know me well enough that the warranty for their work wont even begin ticking down until i get the engine fired up and in the car. Its been 2 years, so if it wasnt for that, the warranty would be long gone now. BTW, out of the parts for my 428, only the ARP bolts, the Performer RPM intake, Distributor (Duraspark), the connecting rods and the block itself came from elsewhere. Heads, pistons, rocker shaft assemblies, oil pump, oil pan, balancer, cam, pushrods, gasket set, timing set, machine work and balancing was all from the speed shop. Im gonna buy the headers through them most likely (still trying to choke down the price of some Thorly's...) the carb and maybe a front dress if i cant find a clean original set.

So sue me. Figuring that ive dropped about 3K with them they can overlook that i bought an Intake and some bolts somewhere else. Its not like i threw some Spectre grade Pep Boys parts in there.

FE parts cost too much.

You bought almost all of it from the Speed shop. Yes they will cover you .  I will bet you that if the Summit parts fails you will not get near the warranty as the stuff you bought from them  though . If you buy the majority of your Stuff from Summit you do not get that same treatment odds are.

Getting in on this thread a bit late but better late than never.

This Guys Garage is keeping me interested in reading Car Craft.  I'm happy to see the Summit garage and any garage large or small.  The big guys (like Summit) are interesting because it shows things I just don't see everyday.  Reader's garages are cool too but when you throw in something like the Summit shop it just more fun and interesting.

If you could somehow do a NASCAR shop or a pro stock team garage that would be even better.

Thumbs up for the selections so far.

As to the off-topic parts source.  Just know that machine shops generally do not want to retail parts because it's time consuming and gives little to no return on investment and may be a money losing effort (paying tax on the inventory).  So bringing in parts purchased from Summit or Jegs or the local speed shop is quite ok with most machine shops I have dealt with.  (it's expected actually).
Engine shops on the other hand make a few bucks in parts retail...and they usually have a machine shop business going along with the engine building shop and so you will want to buy the parts from that engine builder for all the reasons stated in the previous posts.  What do you think?  Yes/no?
