my car is a 74 roadrunner, 360,727, 3.55 gears, 27" tires. I am guessing 350hp- 10-1 compression, ported and cc'ed heads 2.02 valves,770 holley, compcams xe268 224/230 duration and 477/480 lift. Got all the extra's too- windage tray, lifter valley baffle, comp adjustable shaft mounted rockers. All balanced, squared and decked. This car is made too look and sound stock- looking under the hood the only non stock looking thing is the headers. The cam sounds pretty stock also. This brings me to my converter choice. I wanted to be totally streetable and still make a respectable drag strip et. I chose a converter that the manufacturer says will give me a 3,000 stall. What are your thoughts? Too high of a stall?

yep!I would have used no more than a 2500 stall for that setup.

I think you picked the right one. I have a 77 Nova with basically the same set up you have - 350cid, 230/230 duration, 480 lift, 770 Holley, 9 to 1 compression, about 350-360 hp and about 385 lb-ft of torque. I run 3.73 gears and 26 inch tall BFG Drag Radials. I currently have a 2500 stall converter, but I want to move up to 3000. My peak torque occurs just below 4000 rpm. My 60 ft times are in the 1.9 range. So I think the slightly higher stall will help me launch with more torque without killing me on the street. I personally think that 3000 stall is the limit for a true street-friendly car. You can go higher, but then it really starts to get sluggish at low rpm's on the street. I also run a trans cooler to fend off heat from slippage at low rpm cruising. I've bee away from the track for a while, but with my latest chassis and tuning changes, I'm shooting for high 12's with this set up.

that is a pretty similar set up although my car is probably 800+ pounds heavier than yours. I had a converter rated at 2200-2400 but was actualy less than 2,000 rpm-basically I could tell no difference from a stock converter.

Comp. cams recomends a 2000 stall because of the 1600-5800 RPM power band and I would go with a 2500 stall because of the weight of the car it will match the power band of the cam better.

thanks Pontiac man. I am thinking about the weight also. The engine makes about 50 pounds more torque at 3,000 than it does at 2,500 and the torque curve is pretty flat after that. The compcams rated rpm range seems kind of broad- more like it's an advertising gimmick.
