my current th350 in my 78' pontiac t/a is not working and i was considering swapping for 700r4. here's my current combo. 78't/a oldsmobile 403 bored .30 over mild cam, edelbrock peerformer intake,an edelbrock 795cfm 4bbl carb MSD6A ignition box, natching wires and  dual 2 1/2 flowmaster 40 series muffs, and 3:73 richmond gears out back with with factory limited slip/safety track. i like light to light action but also love high rpm driving, this is why i was considering the 700r4. any suggestions on th etranny swap. or should i just go with it?

To my knowledge, there were no Olds bellhousing 700R4,so this would not be an option 4 you, less of an engine swap to sbc.

I would stick with the th-350 as far as durability and only go with a th-700r4 if your wanting the over drive option but for the th-700r4 you will need a bell housing adapter witch you can get from www.jegs.com.You could also go with a th-200-4r over drive transmission and not need the adapter because they have a unibolt bell housing.

i've heard of the easy swap with the 2004r but i've also heard that they are not very durable and that the 700r4 has a better launch becuase of it's low first gear. i had the th350 built for me like 6yrs ago but i drive my car pretty hard and she's a daily driver. i really do need an o/d becuase of my gears out back. i can't seem to find any inherrant weaknesses in the 700r4 but i'm still looking. might you know of any? i'd like to address them before having it installed. and i discovered yesterday about the adaptor plate for the swap. Thanks

I heard just the oposite the 200-4r is stronger then the 700-r4 a buddy of mine has a grand national with a beef up 200-4r and it pulls the front wheels about 2 feet off the ground and he has been using it for over 1 year with no problems. Also the 200-4r has a 2.74 frist gear and the 700-r4 has a 3.06 frist gear.I do not really know what the weak points are in the 700-r4 but have had to replace more of those then any other transmissions when behind a engine with higher horsepower and torq.

THE 200 IS STRONGER THAN A 700 IN STOCK FORM. BUT THE 700 MAKES A FAR BETTER BUILT TRANS AND HAS A WIDE AFTERMARKET SUPPORT. YOU SAY YOU LIKE TO DRIVE HARD.. THEN NEITHER 200 OR 700 WILL LAST VERY LONG BEHIND YOUR COMBO IN STOCK FORM. UNLESS YOU MODIFY A 200 OR 700 YOU'LL JUST BE THROWING $$$ AWAY. DONT FORGET THE COST OF AN ADAPTER, CUTTING DRIVE SHAFT, T.V. CABLE ADJUSTMENT, LINKAGE ADAPTERS FOR YOUR CARB, CROSSMEMBER. I HAVE A 77 CAMARO WITH A TH350 AND I HAVE A 700 IN THE SHOP THAT IVE BEEEN WANTING TO SWAP. BUT I DRAG RACE AND STREET DRIVE ALOT. TH350 GETS ME TO THE END OF THE 1320 EVERY TIME BUT THE 700 WOULD BE NICE ON THE STRRET TO KNOCK DOWN THE RPM'S A BIT. (3100 AT 60MPH.) HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERD A GEAR VENDOR OVERDRIVE UNIT? I'M LOOKING INTO THEM-KINDA PRICEY BUT THE IDEA SOUNDS LIKE A PERFECT SOLUTION...

sure bud. when you get to your choice of forum, simply look to the top right before you pick the topic and there is a little icon that says new topic. click on that and then either your logged in or you'll have to and then a screen that kind of looks like an email will pop up and type away and when your done go to the bottom and click on post. don't worry i had the same issues at first as i'm not real computer literate and hell i was answering back to myself sometimes.

i plan on beefing up the 700. but i can't really find weak point mentioned on a any forums other than the sun gear, sun shell, and 3 4 clutches. do you know of any others? what did they do to yours. my th350 lasted me like maybe 6 yrs more like 5 really this last year felt her slipping away. and that guy claimed i could never break it unless i was making more than 400hp and believe me i'm not even close, but i'm trying to get there. the gearvendors unit would totally be my choice but it's little steep on price. this customer from work has been tranny's for a long time and is kind of doing me a favor becuase we get along and i always take care of him at work. 600.00 for the labor and what ever i want to put into it. i was liek hell yeah. that's why i've been looking for all the weak points in this 700.. see ya bud bandit burning out>>>>>>

The 700r4 is inherently weaker than a 2004r due to the gear ratios and splits the 700 has. That 306 first gear sounds appealing at first until you realize no real use of your first gear powerband. I run a 2004r in a 9 second street car with no problems to this point. Key is... with the 200 (and any trans for that matter) is having it built correctly for your application. Dynotech performance is leading the game at the 2004r. Eric shurts has many an 8 and 9 second regal under his belt with a 2004r. check out dynotechperformance.com

HEY THANKS FOR THE IMFO ON HOW TO POST A THREAD. NOW I'LL BE A THREAD POSTEN FOOL. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER IN MICHIGAN THAT STILL KEEPS ME CONNECTED TO HOT RODS. (3 DEGRRES OUT RIGHT NOW).... THATS ABOUT ALL I HEARD ABOUT 3 4 CLUTCHES AND THE SUN GEAR. TCI AND B&M OFFER SOME NICE UPGRADES AT MODEST PRICES FOR THE 700. THEY ALSO HAVE A VALVE BODY THAT WILL PREVENT YOU FROM BURNING UP THE TRANS IF THE TV CABLE IS NOT ADJUSTED RIGHT FOR AROUND $200. THINK OF IT AS A 200 DOLLAR INSUREANCE POLICY ON YOUR TRANS. I'VE CALLED BOTH TCI AND B&M TECH DEPARTMENTS AND THEY REALLY SET ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I'M NOT THE GREATEST WITH TRANS SO IF I DECIDE TO GO WITH THE 700 I'LL JUST TAKE IT IN AND HAVE THEM DO WHATEVER NEEDS TO BE DONE TO HANDLE MY COMBINATION.  403 CUBIC INCH WITH YOUR MODS SHOULD BRING YOU CLOSE TO 400 HP. YOUR STOCK SMOG HEADS ARE HOLDING YOU BACK. THESE *** AND CAMAROS FROM OUR YEAR WEIGH ALOT MORE THAN YOU THINK. THIS MAY BE WHY YOU THINK YOU HAVE LESS H.P.

yeah my 403 heads have a 83cc chamber head wich gives me about 8:1 compression. i bought a set of 330 heads wich have like a 64cc chamber head wich should raise my compression to around 9.5:1 or maybe 10:1 compression wich would be awesome for the my project. perfect street monster on pump gas. i can't wait to finish her. so what have you done to your 77 camaro?

YEAP POWER IS IN THE HEADS. I RUN WORLD HEADS PORTED HEAVILY ON EXHAUST LIGHTLY ON INTAKE AND SOME BOWL WORK. GO TO READERS RIDES AND TAKE A LOOK AT MINE. LAST I CHECKD I WAS THE ONLY 77 CAMARO IN THERE. OR JUST CLICK ON MY USER NAME. SINCE THEM PHOTOS WERE POSTED, I HAVE ADDED AN EXTERNAL MALLORY PRO MASTER COIL, NEW HEI DISTRIBUTOR, TAYOR 409 PLUG WIRES, A BLACK MAGIC ELECTRIC FAN (BEST THING I EVER PUT ON MY CAR-THEY REALLY WORK), AND A ELECTRIC WATER PUMP DRIVE KIT THAT I CAN SWITCH OVER AT THE TRACK FROM REGULAR CRANK TURN V-BELT TO ELECTRIC DRIVE IN ABOUT 5 MINUTES. WHEN WINTER IS OVER AND ALL THE SNOW CAN KISS MY YOU KNOW WHAT IT'LL COME OUT OF MY SHOP WITH BIGGER CAM AND CARB AND A SMALL SHOT OF NITROUS. MOTOR WILL HAVE 430 MAYBE 440 HP WITH OUT NITRO. I BUILT IT MYSELF FOR THE MOST PART. ITS FULLY RACED PREP MOTOR WITH ALL THE MACHINE WORK DONE. BUT I JUST CHOSE A SMALL CAM AND CARB LAST YEAR TO REALLY ENJOY STREET DRIVING AND GET THE FEEL FOR DRAG RACING.
