I have a 350sbc with World Products iron heads, standard 1.5 rockers, guideplates, and hardened pushrods. I recently had the valve covers off and noticed that one of the rockers wasn't centered over the valve stem. This causes the edge of the rocker to contact the valve stem rather than the center pocket. It seems to be out of line due to the guideplate. I've read recently about cutting the plates and rewelding them to center the pushord. But can I just remove the guideplates since I have iron heads and hardened pushrods? I want to switch to roller rockers and would use the self-aligning type if I can do this. Has anyone else dealt with this? Thanks for any help.

You don't say which type of heads these are but I don't remember any sbc heads by World that use offset or angled rocker placement so if the problem does not exist on both valves that are affected by that guide plate it could be a guide plate that is stamped wrong or possibly a bent pushrod. If the condition exists on both valves just loosen the rocker studs and align the guideplate for correct rocker/valvetip placement,if the condition only exists on one valve the first thing I would do is pull that pushrod and roll it on a flat surface(a piece of glass works great),if the pushrod is not bent then I would pull off two guide plates the one that is a problem and one that is not and lay the problem one on top the other to see if the slot/bolt hole alignment is the same, one of these two things should show the problem. Due to the pushrod holes in the aftermarket heads being different than factory slots I don't think it is possible to not use guide plates or to use self aligning rockers on those heads, and cutting and welding the guideplates is not something that would be required or recommended on that type of heads, and the problem would still exist.

this has been an issue on sbc since the begining of time.its not a big deal, but if it bothers you ISKY makes adjustable guide plates.

If you're gonna switch to self-aligning rockers, you won't need the guideplates.
