ok, i'm installing a 2500 stall converter in a 350t with overdrive, in a 88 firebird, it always over heated due to the lack of air ducts, mainly relied on air damper to shove air up into engine, with trans cooler on it now, should i mount a electric fan on it or should i look for a trans cooler off another car that would fit it, what type of car would it be then, the trans cooler that is on it now is larger than the ones i find on 80's caprices and montecarlo, just worried about over heating, would electric fans be the problem solver, what should my best set up, once again another question

Shoving air up into the engine bay probably won't help because it will cause the air to cavitate in the engine bay and won't allow the heat to escape. The factory air dam helps to disturb air flow so this doesn't happen.

All the power in the world don't mean a thing if you can't get it to the ground!

just curious... did you cure the overheating problem??   pontiac did have  a replacement 4 or 5 inch tall rigid air dam that bolted to the bottom of the radiator support... this deflects enough air up and into the radiator... my sisters 85 t/a had that problem until i put it on.. comes with bolts and j nuts..   the fans could not overcome the negative lower pressure infront of the radiator at any speed above 50mph...

by the way... there are also differnt amp rating fan motors available...  only from delco/gm....  i used to have the amp rating list vs part number... but it has been over 10 years...  and 3 moves...

there are a bunch of differnt aftermarket tranny coolers out there... and i am sorry to say i am out of date on whats available...   there were some with built in fans...

Most of the factory air dams were actually just that. They were there to prevent hot air around the engine from moving forward and back through the rad/fan system when the vehicle is stationary. They weren't actually designed to deflect air up into the engine bay. I've found the best bet for my trans coolers was to mount them ahead of the rad by a couple of inches at least. Don't use the provided push through tie wrap attachments which lay it right on top of the rad. I'm running a 3200 stall converter on a 454 big block and haven't had any issues with my cooler. You might have to fab some brackets to position it properly ahead of the rad but it's worth the effort. I don't think you'll need a fan if you do this.
