Any chance the magazine will find a set of factory iron oval port heads to do a "Part 2" of this article?
Farfetched?
BTW, thanks for testing the "peanut" ports!!!!
Inquiring minds want to know.

I'd like to see a set of 781 or 049 heads tested. It would be interesting to see a stock set tested vs. a set with 2.19/1.88 valves and a little clean-up work... seems most who have the heads cut for the bigger valves also get a little clean-up work done.
The 496 in our Malibu has a set of #781 heads, with 2.19/1.88 valves. It was built to be a mild cruiser, with a RPM intake and 1 3/4" headers. Although I over-cammed it a bit, the drivability was fine, the PB worked, and the car was not lacking torque...
I just pulled the engine to fix an oil pan leak, and decided to swap-in a milder Comp LS-6 replacement cam (figure it will be easier to tune if/when I put the 68 Tri-Power on). Hope to have it running again weekend after next... next weekend, we're taking the 62 to Famosa for a track rental.

True,I am glad you did as well, But I was surprised you wasted time testing them and ignoring the most popular factory head swap on these motor's 781's and 049's. If you ask what to do w a "peanut" motor, That is first thing that comes up.For us budget guys who can only dream of dropping 1-2K on a set of aftermarket heads, a good article all in all (good enough for me to subscribe for two years after reading the article),but you dropped the ball on a complete test.

oh...and "Car Craft"...how about a BBC oval port test where you use a Comp Cam for a big Chevy, and not the 35-518-8 cam for a small block Ford!
check your numbers...and tell us what cam you REALLY used!

also...from a Trick Flow specialist, the TFS heads have a 2.19 intake...not a 2.30 like you claim.

please test some 781's or 049's with 2.19 1.88 valves, testing peanut ports is a joke. i laughed when i seen those heads up against aftermarkets. did the manufacturers pay you to test those tiny peanuts to make them look good? make it apples to apples test, chevys best oval ports vs afertmarkets oval ports. do the right thing. thanks, tommy

Why wasn't the AFR 265cc or 290cc Magnums tested it's commonknowlege about on how good the sbc 180,190&195cc heads flow and perform. The 305cc's get to much attention, when sbc 427 and 454's produce 496 torque numbers with 220cc heads. I also was wondering why 781 type casting wern't tested, but Big General stopped production plus the cost to machine them in order to compete with the aftermarket doesn't seem cost effective.I'm looking forward to a part 2 also. thanx Wieder
