I do not know exactly why you want to test the pick up coil but as far as I know it is either good or bad and the car or truck would not start if it is bad because it would lose fire..

you need a digital volt meter....
set it for ohms.. look for the reading to be between 500 and 1,500 ohms...
then if the shaft is in .. set the volt meter to 2 volt ac and spin the shaft... you should see over 1.0 volts ac... when you turn the shaft...
if it is a small cap gm later model dizzy.. look at the sandwitched reluctor for cracks in the magnet... that will cause drivability problems...
for those ford and mopar owners.. this is a really important test when the ignition fails to spark... as the sintered metal the slide on reluctor fails to hold a magnetic field for a long enough time to cause a signwave output from the pickup coil...
if the pickcoil does not put out enough a/c voltage, the power transister in the module will not turn on to pull the coil ( -) to ground and allow it to saturate the primary windings..
