what lift of cam do you have in it if it is stock 500CFM should be fine. As far as the dip stick if there is enough sticking out you can use a pair of vise grips to pull and twist it out.

The stock cam has a lift of .390 on the intake and .410 on the exhuast with the 1.6 ratio rockers you will have .416 lift on the intake and a .437 lift on the exhuast.Like I said before 500CFM will be find but would not recomend more than 600CFM.

Yep, you'll be fine with 500 CFM. That carb is super adjustable - just get it running and tune from there. Let us know how it turned out! BTW - on that dipstick, when you get that broken stub out and are ready to put a new one in, put the new dip stick tube in the freezer for a couple of hours to shrink up the metal prior to attempting the installation. It should slide in a lot easier.

Oh yeah, and don't add any cr@ppy oil sealers. If you built it right, you don't need 'em.
I almost forgot - to turn the motor over - use the starter! It's a lot easier to do than by hand if it's in the car. Either buy a bump switch or wire one up yourself. All you need to do to activate the starter is to short the starter solenoid terminals.
If you are doing the turning over by hand - remove the spark plugs so you aren't fighting the engine's compression.

pull the #1 spark plug witch is the frist plug closest to the radiator on the drivers side then bump the engine over a little at a time with your thumb over the spark plug hole when you feel pressure try to push your thumb off the hole it should be coming up on TDC then line the mark on the balancer to 0 degres on the timing pointer that should be TDC but make sure the oil pump drive shaft is lining up.If you did not turn the engine wile the dist. was out then it should go right back in. Also if the problem your having is the dist. will not go all the way down in it is that you are not lining up the dist. right or the oil pump shaft is not lined up.

Also if its not lining up you may need to off set the rotor because it will turn some and if you are trying to put it in right on the marks then it will not be set right.

I would set the timing between 12 & 14 degrees with vacuum advance disconnected once its set hook the vacuum advance back up.Also make sure the vacuum advance is plug to the right port vacuum should be at or around 0 degrees at idle..

Ok does it run were the distributor is set now. Also make sure the vacuum advance is on the passenger side.If it runs were the distributor is now you may just have a wire crossed is it missing or popping through the carb.

Check your plug wiring. Also, the old 'thumb over the spark plug hole' trick has always been a PITA to me (big fingers). I finally gave up and got a top dead center stop that threads into the head. MUCH easier.
Listen to Pontiacman - he's on the right path. Check your vacuum advance and set the timing with it disconnected and the vac line plugged. Try starting with 12* BTDC and tune from there. It depends on compression where your motor likes the timing.
If all else fails, make some friends down at the local car club, or talk to the guys at the parts store. Usually somebody knows a tune-up guru that'll come over and show you what to do for a 6 pack of their favorite 'health beverage'.

the good news, new richmond t-10 4 speed trans out of my buddies 56 chevy. he put in a 5 speed with overdrive for better mpgs. The bad, my oil pump in fault, i get no oil coming out of the rockers while oil priming my engine. it worked before i pulled the heads off but i cant think of why it would stop working because of that. so i think the only thing to do now is to buy a good short block and use my heads off the new heads i just put on the elco, but i just did a lot of work for nothing. i have never replaced an engine but you got to learn some how, i will just jump in the deep end
