Yes it will bolt up, you will need a transmission controller because the 4L60E is electronically controlled.
Next question becomes is the 4L60E strong enough for a 396? The 4L80E is tougher. What engine was in the Silverado? If it's the 5.3L it'll probably be ok, but if it's the 4.8L or 4.3L I wouldn't be so sure. Of course I don't really know if there are any differences in the transmission between the different engines, but that's what I'd feel comfortable with.

As far as I know, the 4L80E was never put behind anthing smaller than the 6.0L.
Whether it can take the torque form the 396, depends on what the motor puts out, and how the car's driven.

I have been doing a bit of research on the 4L60E, as I am putting one in my Nova along with an LT1 out of a 96 Caprice. The 4L60E can handle a lot of power. From what I understand, you are safe up to the 400HP/400lb-ft range in stock configuration. If you launch hard at the higher HP/RPM range, you will break parts on any stock trans.
Remember that the 4L60E is the next generation after the 700R4, but computer controlled. You will need a computer, and a switch wired up to the brake pedal to control it. Also, there is NO provision for a mechanical speedometer, so you'll either need to go to digital gauge, or get a tailshaft adapter to accept the mechanical speedo.
