Nice project - LT1 in a 72 Elky. I miss my El Camino(s)... but I sold 'em to buy an engagement ring. At least I got a wife out of the deal, and she doesn't throw away my mags! AND she fully supports my car obsession, although she doesn't understand how I can sit and research the LT1 swap so much. LOL!

I can't wait until CC gets another LT1 article, but I know I gotta wait a couple more months.

Look at earlier in this thread. John said he's dumping an LT1 in his Caprice, and the article is coming out in July. That would really p!ss off a lot of people if they killed the LT1 coverage. Including me.

from CR97WS6: a no budget build,

I like those words, (No Budget).   Isn't that how most of us approach our hobby? ha!  Or is it just me?

I spend and do not keep track/account.  One time I added up all my spending for the 95 Impala SS and decided right then and there to never do that again.  Sheesh it adds up fast...$$$$.

I want to blame Car Craft for corrupting me.  (This hobby is still cheaper than golf righ?).

Hey CC, 'bout the LT1 article, why not drop in a 4.3 crank in a 5.7 block for an ol'/new skool 302, an strap it to the dyno an see hoe high you can rev it? 9000 rpm anyone...

Hey guys-- First off, sorry for my absence on the board.  Things are always busy here.  I do have good news, though:

The LT1 build is going to happen.  The engine is at the machine shop right now.

The plan is to put it back to bone stock for a baseline run on the engine dyno.  Then, we'll throw some bolt-on's at it: an intake, headers, a cam and heads, and finally a high-end set of heads.  Judging from the response to that article, we'll see how much more LT1 stuff we'll do.

Originally, we planned to run it in July, but that's changed.  It will now be in August's issue along with a bunch of other cool engine builds.  If that's too long to wait, stay  tuned to this thread.  I'll post some sneak peaks as the build progresses!

For the guys intereseted in the LT1 swap into an older car, check out the Caprice Classic thread.  I'll keep that updated as I get more work done on the car.

It would be nice if we had a wider space for the messages and pictures, wouldn't it?

Motor at the machine shop!  looks like progress.

John, is the motor back together?  Any baseline dyno numbers to reward the on-line readers with?

John!! You da man! Thanks for doing this build.

August *whine* awww! Ah well, I can wait, I'm still fiddling with cleaning up my engine bay. Man, that is one DISGUSTING job. I'm breaking down and buying a power washer.

Thanks for the sneak peaks, and yeah, it would be nice to have wider pages to post on.

LT1Nova- No problem.  Again, thanks for your interest.  I know what you mean about cleaning years of crusty grime in the engine compartment.  The pressure washer will help a lot.

Hey Karl, thanks for checking in, too.  No, the engine isn't back together yet. All the machining is done. The thrust flange on my crank was wasted, so I'm waiting on a new crank.  The engine should be together soon, though!

I took this picture at the machine shop of the Performer heads waiting to go back on the engine.

Also, here's a sneak peek of the new heads we'll be testing on the dyno!  August will be cool!

Well either do LS engine stuff or LT1 , not both in the same issue. Leave not enough room for other stuff that your Non Chevy guys care about . Heck it is bad enough the Ed is going to put one of those damn things (LS1) in his El Camino. Which is a OK car and a interesting switch BUT why doesn't Smith stuff one of those engines he has been touting to no end in his precious Chevelle if it is sooooooo great? Just a question.

Sweet pics John! I hope you gave the stock heads a chance vs. the Edelbrock units by doing a port and polish job. Any ideas on what you'll do about the wiring portion of the engine? I think this gives a lot of people (including me) an anxiety attack just thinking about it. Karl has got me thinking I can tackle the stock harness and take out the stuff that isn't needed. Hey, it'll save me big ***

Speaking of dyno and harness... how do you plan on doing that?

I just got the latest mag. Too cool! Edelbrock has now introduced it's own version of the LT4 head. *drool* Too bad they are $900 EACH. Might be worth rolling all my loose change together...
