I totally disagree, with you. a 305 is a budget builders dream! they are cheap and plentiful, mostly cheap! there are many arguments against the 305 and why you should use it as a boat anchor, when by todays and old days standards you can make 300 hp so easily. heads and cam! you can take a comp cams 268xe and a set of worked vortec heads and airgap intake and make close to 400 horses, with a 305. add supporting features like headers and tuned carb, low restrictive exhaust and you have a helluva combo having spent less than 1500.00 bucks. for the sake of performance, any thing goes, the tpi is great for low rpm grunt but it dies past 4400rpm. change the cam and make the vortec tpi upgrade as it shouldve been and 40-70 hp can be gained. Never crush dreams.

with the rite cam, heads, carb setup, you can make 300 hp with any small block. a set of vortecs, comp cam 268 XE,or magnum 280, air gap intake long tubes and performance exhaust, would make 350+hp all day long.

I'm glad you support that ANY sbc can make 300+HP. Cuz I have one that WILL NOT without a blower. The 267! I have one and there is no ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE way to get that engine from it's stock 125 HP to 300+. You are half right. An engine with the right tuning, and balanced tuning I mean, will generate decent power gains.

Also from previous posts that I read about torque and HP, torque at the wheels is more important than most tuners think. Alot of tuners think a dyno with a 360 HP at 5400 RPM is braggin rights, but if your peak torque is 375 ft-lbs at 4900 RPM, then what about your low-end? I recently read an article from a Diesel tuners magazine. They tested the 2007 Chevy Siverado 2500 series. The Gasoline engine makes 360 HP and 375 ft-lbs and it's Diesel companion lays down 360 HP and 660 ft-lbs. Which one ran the faster qtr mile? The Diesel!!! It was over 2 seconds faster! Why cuz the engine produced TORQUE to the wheels throughout the ENTIRE RPM RANGE. Torque is the ACTUAL twisting force of the flywheel on the input shaft of the transmission. Once again my earliest post said to do some reasearch. You want 300 HP you can get it and a 305 will do it, but make sure you are balancing your tuning for torque as well. You 300 HP will be useless if you have 100 ft-lbs goin to the rear wheels until 2800 RPM.

World Products still lists the 305 s/r replacement w/1.94 intakes, if I remember right they altered int. valve position in order to clear the smaller bore.Work over these heads as much as you can for more power. When your done playing reinstall your factory heads. WIEDER

I didn't take the time to read all the posts here. But I will say that there are a couple guys on thirdgen.org that are running 305 motors and getting in the low 11's.

throw a stroker kit on it.. bore it a little... then you should be good.. but a 305 is worth buildup.

According to my calculations,202/160 valves may be to big to work on 305 sbc. I am considering 194/160 350 heads which i think will work. I was curious about bigger valves .I did not know if valves would rub cylinder walls or if piston valve reliefs would accommodate202valves with out affecting  edge of piston strength. I thought I would ask if anybody knew answer to this question.

this was brought up in another 305 thread. the 202 valve setup will not work due to the small cylinder bore. the 194's will work. ive done some research for my 305's, and found that there were a few that had these heads stock (late 80's models for sure). i just put a .30 over 305 in my s10 and am going to run stock heads til i get the itch for more power, then im putting on my 350 heads. im also thinking about a blower

Thanks mercman. My 305 is stock bore with flat top pistons.  I should have paid $80.00 and bored .030 over, then i might not have had to question 194 valves. I still felt 202/160 valves were too big. It is still best to ask for advice. Again,Thanks mercman. I like dirt track racing.

It's amazing the response a simple question like 305 or 350? can generate. I read all of them back to 11/07. Lot of good stuff, some not, but one guy bypassed all of the involved, intricate (and important) info about size, speed, volume, etc. which will confuse the hell out of most people. CSIROC put the most important thing everyone needs to know in a nutshell. He said, "it's all a balance". If it doesn't all work together for the common good, you've wasted your money. (Kind of like our world, huh?)

same money for parts...so why?50 (or 78 for that matter)is A LOT of cubes...at 1.2hp/cubes (conservative) you do the math...

verdict:if your going poor boy..enjoy the fruits of your labor..

if your spending hard earned money (you do earn your own,eh?)take a cold shower!!
