511?  Nah,  that's just a little bitty "429" . . . nothing to see here . . . move along . . .  and those heads are painted Ford blue . . . they couldn't be SCJs . . . or P51s . . . . Top secret . . . .

Dune buggies!  Now you see why I have to operate a "bird sanctuary"

The '63 Tempest really gives all turbo Crafters (and sleeper builders) something to shoot for. Too bad Hot Rod didn't detail the oiling system on the "mid-mount" twin Holset system.   Also, a nine-second car without any safety gear seems like a really bad idea.  As does running a spool in a street car.

Lest you forget, a while back as Car Craft editor, Jeff named two clapped-out, government surplus '90s GM pickup project vehicles "Jake and Elwood" in reference to The Blues Brothers movie, a feature-film-turned-cult-classic that immortalized a '70s Mopar police cruiser.

On top of that, the articles about those trucks reminded me of articles I grew up reading in the late '80s and early '90s like, "Installing Spark Plug Wires on Your Small Block Chevy."

I miss what to me was a Car Craft watershed era in the late '90s and early '00s when a brand-neutral Freiburger ran the show. Fresh was "righteous" and cliches were "total bummers". It included new themes for projects, new takes on old themes, the pretty Taylor Vlahos and a completely new improvised way of inventing or using new nouns and verbs. For example, we've all at one time or another found "mystery spew" on the upholstery of a potential project.

But I’m a loyal Car Craft reader and the occasional dull Chevy small block or Chevelle/GM A-body article is a minimal inconvenience. Or articles like “How to Install a Distributor”.

Your budget 302 article was an interesting article. Being a type of engine "rebuild" that a lot of guys could do and afford making a suprising amount of power for the parts picked. I think you should take it one step further by yanking the heads and having one of the staff do some porting typical of what a back yarder would do. Do some pocket work and smoothing out and see where the power end ups with a dyno test. The rules would be that a professional porter could give advice but use a common die grinder by someone who hasn't done any porting also you would have to keep the stock valves. Oh, yeah, how about trying a Edelbrock back to back with the Holley used in the previous test?

Believe it or not there are a lot of guys sending me letters every month asking me how to stab a dis. and how to change jets. These guys are a large part of the outer core of CC readers and we run those stories for that reason. You know that. Huskinhano: I've done the iron head porting story a few times and to be honest, on a 302, even the low end aftermarket heads are going to kick a port job around for the money and hassle. And, these guys will howl if I put ANOTHER $500 into the worst heads on the planet (302!) have you seen the exhaust port? Ugg. Ive been dying to try the AFR 165 CNC heads. Rev city with a solid roller
