Coolant in the Oil Pan.

Hello my fellow gearheads i'm back with another question. I hope I cant get a clear for this one. Like 2 days ago me and my buddy pulled out his 302 off his 66? mustang. When we got to drain the oil pan, what do we see.... coolant. "Green/Yellow coolant followed by slimy orange/brown liquid that was once oil. Now my question is this, What the *** happened there. Besides of putting the coolant in the oil goes. BTW his girlfriend had the car at that time so I wouldnt doubt it that might have happened. But can u give me some possibilities. The motor needs to be rebuild but I just wondered what might it be, besides that stupid move.

Ford small blocks aren't my strongest suit but these are some general thoughts. A blown head gasket can cause that, either by coolant getting around the piston rings or a straight coolant to oil passage leak. If I remember right those also have a timing cover that the water pump bolts to, and if that is the case then it is possible that a hole or crack formed behind the water pump impellers and would very quickly put coolant into the oil (I've seen this in Pontiac and Buick covers at the Junkyard). Then lastly a cracked block, head, intake has the potential to do the same. Lastly as you mentioned, simply pouring antifreeze into the Oil fill.
Did you actually pull the engine from the car or just the oil pan? It sounds like you pulled the engine already, but if there is a chance that it is still in the car you could try and pressurize the cooling system (there is a little pump tool that hooks up to where the radiator cap goes) and depending on those results possibly eliminate or confirm (at least with high probablilty) if there is a drastic coolant leak or simply coolant poured into the oil. Hope this has helped.

we pulled it but besides the anti freeze in the oil, like two pistons broke, I think a valve got stuck so the spring poped up. We'll have to rebuild.

If you're lucky, it didn't split a cylinder. If you're not - the block is scrap iron. Usually in a stocker, if you get very harsh piston to valve contact, the cast OEM pistons shatter and there's a good chance the wrist pin will window the cylinder.
